Crimson Notes 1/11/10

As many expected, Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain will forgo his senior season to pursue his career in the NFL. McClain, who is a solid first round pick, announced his decision Monday afternoon at a press conference in Tuscaloosa.

Nick Saban announced Monday that ‘Bama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart will remain in Tuscaloosa. Smart had been rumored for the head coaching position at Texas Tech, as well as the defensive coordinator position at the University of Georgia. Smart who played and graduated from the University of Georgia, was being pursued heavily by his alma mater over the last few weeks.

Today marked the start of a new semester at the University of Alabama. As many as 11 new student athletes arrived in Tuscaloosa, as the Tide football program prepares for the 2010 campaign. Six of the expected 11 players are recent high school student athletes who completed course work early in order to enroll at Alabama. The advantage to early enrollment means the new arrivals will be able to participate in spring practice and be implemented into the “system” at a quicker and more adequate pace.

Some of the notable enrollees include highly touted quarterback Phillip Sims and defensive back DeMarcus Milliner. Milliner is considered by many to be the top prospect in the state of Alabama for 2010.
