SEC PICKS: 9/26/09

Alabama v Virginia Tech

Last Week: 6-3
Overall: 11-4

ARKANSAS/ALABAMA
As I make this prediction…I consider the weather. In my game preview on Monday I provided everyone with numerous statistics in respect to the Arkansas offense and defense. If you examine the game preview blog, you know my thoughts on this contest. However, rain could change many things. The Alabama ground attack is solid, while the Arkansas ground attack is less than average. Based on what I know about both teams a wet field, or a driving rain storm, would certainly favor Alabama. The “bread and butter” of the Arkansas attack is through the air. A wet field is bad enough, but falling rain will totally disrupt the Arkansas offense. If the Hogs are forced to rely on the run, and bank on stopping the Alabama ground game, Arkansas will be in deep trouble. ‘Bama should win the game rain or shine, but inclement weather will certainly favor the Tide. However, being a diehard college football fan, I would love nothing more than to see dry conditions. I’ve had about enough of this rain.

WINNER: ALABAMA

OLE MISS/SOUTH CAROLINA
In this ESPN Thursday night special the country finally gets to see what the Ole Miss Rebels have under the hood. If nothing else, the atmosphere in this game should be electric. On the surface this appears to be a “can’t miss” viewing opportunity for the hardcore college football fan. Do I think Ole Miss is overrated in respect to being a top 5 team? Yes. Will the Rebels beat South Carolina? Yes.

WINNER: OLE MISS

LSU/MISSISSIPPI STATE
Congrats to the Bulldogs for not being the worst team in the SEC. Hold you head high State fans…that honor now goes to Vandy. However, don’t let this new found excitement get the best of you…LSU should have no problem in this one.

WINNER: LSU

FLORIDA/KENTUCKY
Are the Gators really the best team in the country? Are the Gators even the best team in the SEC? Judging by the first few games, it appears that Tim Tebow will have to carry the entire team on his back. One could say he’s done it before…but he also had some help. Florida lacks explosive offensive playmakers outside of Tebow himself. That fact alone will prove problematic for the Gators as the season moves along. In this contest, Kentucky will make some plays…but Florida will make more.

WINNER: FLORIDA

ARIZONA STATE/GEORGIA
Georgia quarterback Joe Cox looked very impressive in the shootout win against Arkansas. I look for Georgia to handle the Sun Devils at home.

WINNER: GEORGIA

OHIO/TENNESSEE
Lane Kiffin closes his mouth for a few minutes so his team can play a football game.

WINNER: TENNESSEE

BALL STATE/AUBURN
The Tigers will improve to 4-0 before beginning a tough stretch in the SEC.

WINNER: AUBURN

VANDERBILT/RICE
Vandy is bad…but Rice is horrible. Does "bad" beat "horrible" on most days? I don't care and many people in the SEC...well...they don't either.

WINNER: VANDERBILT
