Crimson Notes 9/23/09
Julio Jones and Roy Upchurch are back at full speed and ready to go against Arkansas. Jones and Upchurch missed the contest against North Texas due to knee and ankle injuries suffered against Florida International. Both players have been in full contact drills this week, and will certainly be in action when the Razorbacks come to town.
Alabama punter P.J. Fitzgerald has a good problem. Thanks to his performance, (or lack thereof) against North Texas, Fitzgerald is no longer listed as one of the nation’s top 20 punters.
P.J. is currently averaging 44.7 yards per punt and booted a 49 yard effort against North Texas. If Fitzgerald were eligible for a ranking, he would currently be 12th in the nation.
So, why isn't he eligible? Fitzgerald has only punted nine times this season and averages three punts per game, the minimum number of punts per game required by the NCAA to be nationally ranked is 3.6 per contest. Why is this problem excellent for Fitzgerald, the team, and ‘Bama fans? Lack of punting…equals offensive success. The Crimson Tide is currently averaging 43 points per game in 2009.
Let's hope P.J. will spend Saturday (and the rest of the season) punting into the "catch net"...rather than punting to the opposition.
