We all know the game is played on the field, but if college football magazines had the final say, Alabama has the potential to be holding the trophy for the second consecutive season.

In a preseason composite poll from Phil Steele, Athlon’s, Sporting News, and Lindy’s…Alabama is the No. 1 team in the nation.

The Crimson Tide received three first-place votes and 98 of a possible 100 points according to the poll. Oklahoma garnered the other first-place votes.

Ohio State, who didn’t receive a first place vote, was the No. 2 team selected behind Alabama in three of the four publications listed. The Buckeyes earned a total of 95 points which placed them directly behind the defending champions.

Alabama will certainly be regarded as the No. 1 team in the country in every credible poll to begin the 2010 campaign.

From a fan prospective rankings are fun to discuss, but as the old expression goes, “just win baby…the rest will take care of itself."
