Media outlets react to the departure of Mal Moore

Mal Moore, who has held the title of Director of Athletics at the University of Alabama since 1999, stepped down this afternoon due to pending health issues.

Moore, 73, will now take a position as a special assistant to UA president Judy Bonner.

Spending six decades with the University of Alabama in various capacities, Moore is being remembered via local, regional, and national media outlets, as a dedicated servant and leader.

While many, in the short term, will remember Mal Moore as simply the man who hired Nick Saban, in the grand scheme of things, Moore was, and is...a cornerstone of Alabama athletics.

Chris Williams gives verbal to Alabama

Camden County High School (Kingsland, GA) defensive back Chris Williams has given his verbal commitment to the University of Alabama for 2014.

Williams, who stands 6-foot-2 and tops the scale at 180-pounds, selected the Crimson Tide over the likes of Auburn, Ole Miss, and Ohio State.

Although Williams has not been given a “star rating” per Rivals.com, he is considered a four-star prospect per other respected recruiting outlets such as 247Sports.com and Scout.com.

Williams will now join current high school teammate, Kalvaraz Bessent, as an Alabama verbal commitment for 2014. Last week Bessent, who also plays in the secondary, gave his verbal pledge to the Crimson Tide.

In total, Alabama now has three verbal commitments in respect to the 2014 signing class.

Spring practice begins for the back-to-back champs

On a day where college basketball conference tournament action took center stage, the Alabama Crimson Tide football team was hard at work on the gridiron as the first practice of the spring session commenced.

Covered by a “Chamber of Commerce” weather day in Tuscaloosa, the first spring practice of the season was complete with new faces, new numbers, and position shuffles.

News of the day

As noted by Andrew Gribble of al.com, the following information, in part, was relayed across the wire as Crimson Tide practice took place this afternoon.

-WR Cyrus Jones, WR Christion Jones, and RB Dee Hart worked with the defensive backs. Nick Saban noted, in his post-practice press conference, that any position “flips” are simply experimental.

-LB Xzavier Dickson took reps with the defensive line.

-As expected, WR Kevin Norwood and DB John Fulton did not participate due to toe injuries/surgery. Both players are likely to miss the duration of spring camp, per Nick Saban.

-WR Marvin Shinn, who opted out of the offseason workout program and will most likely transfer, was predictably absent from the initial practice session.

-Today marked the Alabama coaching debut of secondary coach Greg Brown, offensive line coach Mario Cristobal, and wide receivers coach Billy Napier.

-The Crimson Tide will return to the practice field Monday for the second session of spring camp.

Kalvaraz Bessent gives verbal to Alabama

Camden County High School (Kingsland, GA) defensive back Kalvaraz Bessent has given his verbal commitment to the University of Alabama for 2014.

Bessent, who stands 6-foot-1 and tops the scale at 188-pounds, selected the Crimson Tide over the likes of Auburn, Florida, Florida State, and Georgia.

Considered a four-star prospect per Rivals.com, Bessent becomes the second verbal commitment for Alabama in respect to the 2014 signing class.

Although spring practice for the 2013 season is set to begin this Saturday, it is clear that Nick Saban and his coaching staff live in the present, while maintaining an “obligatory eye” on the future.
